Clarity – insight into how you function

As we begin a new quarter, take a moment to review the goals you have written. For my Full Focus peeps, check over your goals during your quarterly preview.

When it comes to writing goals for your Enneagram type, it’s important to consider your unique motivations and tendencies. Here are some tips to help you craft clear goals that will work for you:

  1. Type One: Ones are motivated by a desire for perfection and a fear of making mistakes. Set goals that challenge you to let go of your need for control and embrace imperfection, such as trying a new hobby or exploring new possibilities in your career.
  2. Type Two: Twos are motivated by a desire to be helpful and needed by others. Set goals that encourage you to prioritize self-care and personal growth, such as taking a solo trip or trying a new form of therapy.
  3. Type Three: Threes are motivated by a desire for success and recognition. Set goals that challenge you to focus on internal validation and personal fulfillment, such as learning a new skill or pursuing a passion project.
  4. Type Four: Fours are motivated by a desire for authenticity and self-expression. Set goals that encourage you to explore creativity and embrace your unique perspective, such as starting an innovative project or taking a class in a new art form.
  5. Type Five: Fives are motivated by a desire for knowledge and understanding. Set goals that challenge you to step outside your comfort zone and engage with the world around you, such as traveling or trying a new hobby.
  6. Type Six: Sixes are motivated by a desire for security and stability. Set goals that encourage you to trust your instincts and take risks, such as starting a business or changing your career path.
  7. Type Seven: Sevens are motivated by a desire for adventure and novelty. Set goals that challenge you to cultivate mindfulness and presence, such as starting a meditation practice or daily gratitude journal.
  8. Type Eight: Eights are motivated by a desire for power and control. Set goals that encourage you to cultivate vulnerability and emotional intelligence, such as practicing active listening or seeking out therapy.
  9. Type Nine: Nines are motivated by a desire for peace and harmony. Set goals that challenge you to prioritize your needs and desires, such as setting boundaries or pursuing a personal objective without seeking approval from others.

Consistency – focusing on the process

Achieving your goals requires effective planning, and the SMARTER framework can make them more attainable. If you haven’t established your goals for the year, it’s time to do so. Writing down your goals is essential for five reasons: it clarifies what you want, helps you overcome resistance, motivates action, filters out distractions, and enables you to track progress.

When setting goals for the upcoming quarter, consider using the Full Focus Planner’s SMARTER framework, which is built on the premise that how goals are written matters. To be effective, every goal must meet seven criteria: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Risky, Timebound, Exciting, and Relevant.

Specific – Specifying your goals is crucial to achieving results. Vague intentions such as “start a business,” “lose weight,” or “pay off debt” may be mistaken for goals, but they do not lead to action. Turn aspirations into achievements by clearly defining your goals.

Actionable: Actionable goals focus on doing rather than being. They begin with strong verbs like create, lose, or eliminate, while non-actionable goals use words such as be, have, or become.

Risky: Compared to realistic goals, risky goals spark creativity, encourage seeking out additional resources, and demand personal growth.

Timebound: Time markers aid in concentration and create a sense of urgency. Deadlines that are close in time tend to increase productivity, while distant deadlines often result in procrastination.

Exciting: Motivation and persistence are fueled by exciting goals, even when obstacles arise. When there is a strong commitment to the goal, challenges can inspire creative solutions instead of causing defeat.

Relevant: Evaluating the relevance of goals requires trusting one’s instincts. Goals must align with an individual’s life demands, values, passions, and other existing goals.

Habit goals require additional details such as a start date, habit frequency, time trigger, and streak target.

By using the SMARTER framework, your goals become more specific, measurable, actionable, risky, timebound, exciting, and relevant, which increases their achievability in the long run.

Going after your dreams can be scary and overwhelming, particularly if those closest to you fail to comprehend your aspirations.
